Crying Over Sliced Onion

Why do Onions make us cry when we cut 'em? You can blame it on sulfuric acid, the same stuff that's in your car battery.

When an onion is cut, enzymes go to work on sulfur-containing amino acids in the cells, releasing a gas that converts to sulfuric acid when combined with the moisture on your eyes. This irritates 'em and starts the tears flowing, washing away the nasty stuff!
